Choosing Self Storage Units

Once you have decided to rent a self storage unit, it is important to determine what size unit you should rent. There are some questions you should ask yourself - what will your self storage unit have in it? Do you intend to use your self storage unit for a short time or a longer period of time? What types of items will be stored in your self storage unit? And finally, will you be adding more items to your self storage unit in the future?

Think about what you will use your self storage units for. If you will be using it to store items for the winter, such as a motorcycle, jet skis, a small bike, or a quad, you will need to have very accurate measurements of those machines to use before you pick a unit size. Always allow for a bit of extra space around them. For example, if you choose a unit that is the same length as your motorcycle, you may run into some problems.

If you use your self storage location to store the items you sell from a business, you will need a larger container than if you were simply storing boxes that can be piled on one top of the other. A larger space is required to create aisles between the items that are stored so that you can easily access each box. Turn your storage unit into a filing room or organized stock room to easily access the exact product or file you need.

For miscellaneous items, you will need as big a space as will comfortably accommodate all stored items without harming any of them. You may have to do some guessing, but by carefully examining your items, you'll be able to find the right size for your self storage rental.

Now for rental period, if you are renting for a short amount of time and you will not need to access the contents of any of the boxes, you can use the smallest unit available that will accommodate all of your needs. However, for longer periods of time, you will probably need to select a bigger space so you can have room to access the contents at will.

Consider what types of items you will be storing in your self storage unit. Sturdy items can likely be housed in a smaller unit. These items are most likely stackable, allowing you to take advantage of more than just the floor space. For breakables, you will likely need a larger storage unit so that you can better spread out your storage boxes.

One of your most important considerations is whether you will be adding new items in the future. If you filled up your self storage unit after cleaning out your house or collecting items to give your child when they go off to college, you might consider that you will have extra items to store later on. So rent a larger storage unit than you need when you first rent it to avoid the later hassle of moving items to a bigger unit or having to rent another unit.
